Ine no Funaya (Boat Houses of Ine)
Ine no Funaya (Boat Houses of Ine) is one of the signature destinations of “Deep Kyoto,” and the first fishing village in Japan to be designated as a
Important Preservation District for Groups of Traditional Buildings.
The rows of boat houses built directly along the water’s edge create a uniquely rare landscape in Japan—
a charming scene that resembles a “town floating on the sea.”
Its serene beauty continues to captivate travelers from around the world.

The first floor of each Funaya serves as a boat garage, storage area, and workspace,
with a sloped floor leading directly into the sea, allowing boats to be pulled in and out with ease.
The second floor is a residential living space, and many families continue to live here today—
making these buildings “living fishing-village homes” that remain active and authentic.
Some Funaya have been converted into guesthouses (Funaya Minshuku),
offering visitors the chance to experience daily life right beside the sea.

A must-do experience when visiting Ine is the Ine Bay Sightseeing Cruise.
From the water, you can enjoy a panoramic view of the Funaya lining the circular bay—
a perspective that truly reveals the harmony between daily life and the sea.
The sight of Funaya extending out toward the water offers a completely different impression
from what you see on land—filled with breathtaking beauty and dramatic scale.

Quiet, peaceful, and far removed from the noise of the everyday world—
this fishing village embodies the essence of Japan’s timeless rural landscape.
